Updates on the Transfer of the Computer Science Major to CDSS

The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) has been established and three undergraduate majors have transferred from the College of Letters & Science (L&S) to CDSS. The three undergraduate programs in CDSS are: Computer Science, Data Science, and Statistics.

Teen Research Program Instructor, Summer 2024
The Lawrence Summer Teen Research Program offers week-long immersive STEM learning experiences for students in grades 7-12 across a range of science disciplines. The Teen Research Program Instructor role is perfect for Graduate or Undergraduate Students passionate about both STEM and education. As an Instructor, you’ll facilitate fun, engaging, and meaningful hands-on science learning for teens. It is a great opportunity for professional growth, and you will gain valuable experience in science communication and teaching STEM to middle and highschoolers.

  • Out for Undergrad is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization designed to help high-achieving LGBTQ undergrads reach their full potential.
  • LGBTQ+ engineering students will have the opportunity to discuss being out in the engineering industry and hear from professionals who are out in their careers. 
  • Students will network with LGBTQ+ peers and professionals from top engineering companies from a wide range of industries across the country. 
  • Students will have the opportunity to find LGBTQ+ mentors in their field. 
  • Sponsoring companies will recruit students for jobs and internships at the career fair and throughout the conference.

We have three total rounds for applications but applying early is highly encouraged as all rounds are of rolling admissions, with deadlines on:

The Berkeley M.E.T. Program Continuing Student Application portal is NOW LIVE! M.E.T. Students earn dual-degrees from the Haas School of Business AND College of Engineering. Berkeley M.E.T. gives you world-class instruction, industry experience, and career coaching, all in a top-notch cohort of students as talented and motivated as you are.

 

Current UC Berkeley College of Engineering sophomores majoring in an M.E.T. academic track (AE, BioE, CE, EECS, IEOR, ME, or MSE) are eligible to apply to the M.E.T. program during the spring of their sophomore year.

 

The Continuing Student Application deadline is April 1 at 4pm PST

If admitted, students will join the M.E.T. community Fall of their junior year.

Falling Walls Lab

Win a trip to Berlin!
 
Falling Walls Labs are science/innovation slams that take place worldwide. Young researchers, students, and entrepreneurs can pitch their innovative ideas or research that creates a positive impact on science and society to an interdisciplinary jury that will select the winner. Topics can be broad and are not limited to engineering and science. All winners of the Labs worldwide will be invited to the Falling Walls Conference in Berlin in November with all expenses paid.

AiiCE Computing Environment Survey (ACES)

Duke University is conducting a study titled “AiiCE Computing Environment Survey (ACES),”  which explores how university CS departments foster equitable and inclusive academic environments for all students (undergraduate and graduate). Please help with this important study by filling out the following survey NO LATER THAN APRIL 30. 100 students completing this survey will be randomly selected to receive a $20 electronic gift card (drawing to be held after May 1 and winners notified via email by May 8). Note that to be eligible for the drawing, you must provide your full name and a university-affiliated email at the end of the survey. 

 

The survey can be completed online in approximately 5 minutes. To complete it, please do the following:

  1. Review the consent form (https://bit.ly/consent-aces), which discusses the purpose of the study and other relevant information about participation.
  2. Complete the survey (https://bit.ly/survey-aces)
     
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact A. Nicki Washington at nicki@cs.duke.edu. Results will be shared with department leadership. However, instructors/faculty/department/university will not have access to any individual responses. The researchers may publish the results of this study, but they will not include any information that could identify students (e.g., individual responses). Stanford Science Mentorship Institute (sci-MI)

if you're passionate about teaching and mentoring and want to help design content in electrical engineering and research for high school students, consider joining the Science Mentorship Institute as a curriculum developer and/or mentor in the Electrical Engineering Mentorship Program!

We are debuting a new Electrical Engineering Research Mentorship Program for Summer 2024 and are looking for motivated, passionate individuals to help us develop this program and make it a success. We are looking for the following positions, anticipating around 5 hour/week commitment through the Spring 2024 Semester. Each position will develop didactic content (including lectures, Canvas modules, and journal clubs) about their area of expertise as well as electrical and computer engineering research in general. 

  • Circuits Content Developer 

  • Computer Architecture Content Developer 

  • Software Engineering Content Developer 

  • Signal Processing Content Developer 

  • Embedded Systems Content Developer

In addition, we are looking for volunteers to provide meaningful mentorship in electrical and computer engineering research skills and methods to underrepresented high school students in a completely virtual format throughout the Summer 2024 semester. We rely on volunteers like you to provide equitable and accessible science education. All roles are no more than a 5 hour/week commitment over the summer, and the times are flexible based on your availability. These opportunities serve as great resources to gain new skills and expand your portfolio/resume, as we track volunteer hours.

These information can be found on our website, but to summarize the competition details:

  • The competition will take place on May 18th 2024
  • The week before the competition, participants will be given the credentials to register on the competition platform and the full set of instructions to successfully participate. 
  • Participants will be given a series of real-world challenges that represent the skillsets most in-demand by the DoD. These challenges are designed to measure your understanding of tasks and test your technical, analytical, and strategic abilities in the following skills categories: Forensics, Malware/ Reverse Engineering, Networking & Reconnaissance, Open-Source Intelligence Gathering (OSINT) and Web Security.
  • Winners of the competition will not only get the unique opportunity to learn more about jobs with DoD, but also a share of the $15,000 cash prize pool.
  • Applicants must be US citizens (native or naturalized) and over the age of 18 to qualify. Individuals from all levels of cybersecurity experience, whether you are a seasoned cybersecurity professional or just starting in the field, with a genuine interest in a career at the DoD, are welcome to apply.
  • Only individuals can participate, teams are not permitted.
