Applied AI/Machine Learning Research Projects Opportunities
Yuan Chiang is a second year PhD in Materials Science and Engineering working on computational materials science. They are seeking students who are passionate about applied ML/AI for science, particularly those proficient in Python, PyTorch, LangChian, sveltekit, or data analysis/visualization for the projects below.
Project 1: Evaluating Large Language Model (LLM) Agents on the Retrieval of Materials Project DatabaseWe invite motivated students to join us in evaluating LLM agents on the retrieval of data from the Materials Project database in a broader sense. A preprint of our work is already available for reference at: https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.17244. The qualified contributor will have the opportunity to become a coauthor of this paper before submission in/before May, provided sufficient contributions.
Project 2: Developing and Training ML Models for Mapping Composite Materials Design to Mechanical Properties In collaboration with Prof. Grace Gu in Mechanical Engineering, we are looking into training various types of ML models to map composite materials design to mechanical properties. This project expects more effort and time commitment in independent research to lead the progress.
For interested students, please email Yuan Chiang at cyrusyc@berkeley.edu your GitHub/GitLab username and link related projects that can demonstrate the proficiency to work independently under proper guidance.

Splash at Berkeley Spring 2024
Splash at Berkeley is an educational outreach event each semester where high school students come to campus for a day of classes taught by undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs. These classes are between 1 and 3 hours (in hour multiples) and can be taught on literally any (appropriate) topic of your interest. Topics in the past have ranged from black holes to crocheting to poker. Anything you want to teach, you can! Our goal is to get high school students interested in the wide range of topics they can explore during college. Additionally, this is a fantastic way to give back to the local Bay community. This spring, Splash will be on Sunday, April 21, and we would love for you to teach with us! Teacher registration is open until February 26th.
If you have any questions about the program or teaching, please email Sajant Anand at sajant@berkeley.edu. Also, please encourage your friends to teach as well! We had ~300 students in the Fall and are working to have even more this semester, which will only be possible with the help of enthusiastic teachers like you.
