Transfer Application Process

The UC system application period is November 1-30 for admission to the following fall semester. UC Berkeley does not accept new transfer applications for the spring semester. For more information on the admissions process, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Coursework Transferability and Equivalency

Required core preparation courses:

  • one year calculus (UCB Math 51 & 52)
  • multivariable calculus (UCB Math 53)
  • differential equations and linear algebra (UCB Math 54)
  • two courses of calculus based physics with lab (UCB Physics 7A & 7B)
  • one course in natural science from the following (UCB Chem 1A, Chem 1B, Physics 7C, Bio 1A, or Bio 1B)
  • two approved reading and composition courses (UCB R1A and R1B)

Please note, the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) offered at California community colleges is not accepted by the College of Engineering.

Courses that cover or partially cover material in our department’s lower division courses required for graduation (but not admission) are strongly recommended; the more of these courses completed, the stronger the application will be. Therefore, when possible, it is to the applicant’s benefit to take courses in discrete math, probability, circuits, data structures, and C++ or Java.

  • California Community Colleges: Please use assist.org to view articulation agreements between UCB and your community colleges.
  • Non-CA Community Colleges or other four-year institutions: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer course evaluation before admission.
  • You can find information on the COE junior transfer process online as well as the Berkeley admissions website.
  • You will need to make your best guess as to which courses you took may satisfy the prerequisite requirements. You can find R&C reviews online.
  • Review the COE exam credit page; any other course requirement would need to be taken for letter grade and credit. 
  • Please keep in mind that transfer admission priority is given to California community college students. You can find more information about the junior transfer process as well as max units from 4 year schools for eligibility online.

  • Bridge courses are self paced classes that junior transfer students will take to fulfill lower division requirements that are only partially satisfied by community college coursework
  • Those who have received partial credit for certain lower division courses, including CS 61A, CS 61B, and CS 61C taken at a community college may petition to complete the courses through supplementary work in CS 47A, CS 47B, or CS 47C.
  • If you’re at a California Community College, assist.org will indicate if you need a bridge/supplemental course
  • For non-Californians, you would work directly with your Engineering Student Services Advisor after transferring.

ECE & EECS Schedule & Sample Plan

  • Complete the lower-division courses from the freshman/sophomore year curriculum that you were unable to take at your previous institution. 
  • Complete upper division curriculum after finishing lower division, it is not advised to skip ahead. Lower Division is foundational coursework for upper division, it’s important to complete them in order so you’re prepared for upper division classes

The College of Engineering automatically approves a fifth semester for any transfer student admitted missing three or more lower-division requirements for their major.
