Edward Chang and Gopala Anumanchipalli speak on "Turning Brain Waves into Words" on 11/01/23

Abstract

Direct measurement of cortical activity using neural implants gives us a new window into the functioning of the human brain. In this talk, we will present the latest developments in Brain-Computer Interfacing (BCI) for communication using intracranial electrophysiology to externally augment lost function due to brain injury or stroke. A decade in the making, this work combines the latest in neural engineering, AI and neuroscience, enabling a neuroprosthesis that we tested in paralyzed participants within a clinical trial. This convergence of AI and neural interfaces also opens new avenues towards understanding of the basic mechanisms of human intelligence.
