Abstract

We are entering the age of the Internet of Moving Things. With the proliferation of smartphones and low cost connected sensors, such as GPS/RFID/Beacons, a new class of “movement data” is growing rapidly – from people, public transportation, ride-sharing services, etc — creating unprecedented opportunities for cities, businesses, and the everyday person. With such data, arise new technology challenges around systems and algorithms to process such ‘big’ spatial data to power the next wave of urban mobility and mapping technologies.

Biography

Shiva Shivakumar is interested in urban mobility and building systems/products for this new class of ‘real world’ problems. He is currently a Vice President at Google working on Maps infrastructure. He was previously CEO/Co-Founder of Urban Engines, a startup working on analytics around space/time data, that was acquired by Google. Prior to Urban Engines, from 2001 through 2010, Shiva was a Vice President at Google, helping to build AdSense, Search Appliances, Cloud Apps, and research and development centers across the world. With a deep interest in open data, Shiva created Sitemaps.org to surface Web data with an industry-first collaboration between Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft. Shiva has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University, where he was awarded the Samuel Thesis Award.
