How Kevin Miao discovered computer science
EECS Master's student Kevin Miao (CS B.A. '21, advisor: Joey Gonzalez) is the subject of a CDSS interview in which he discusses some of the challenges he faced as a first-generation college student, and his desire to build a more equitable future for everyone. Miao migrated from the Netherlands and first started coding at Berkeley in a biology lab. While taking Data 8, he discovered some of the ways that biases inherent in data science and machine learning models disproportionally affect certain groups, and began considering ways one might approach building "a new paradigm of machine learning.” His research currently focuses on creating frameworks for interpretable, self-supervised representation learning in order to build safer intelligent systems.
