Umesh Vazirani and co-authors receive FOCS Test of Time Award

Umesh Vazirani

EECS Professor Umesh Vazirani and co-authors Aranyak Mehta, Amin Saberi, and Vijay Vazirani are recipients of the FOCS Test of Time Award for their 2005 paper, “AdWords and Generalized On-line Matching.”

Presented annually at the IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) and sponsored by the Technical Committee on Mathematical Foundations of Computing (TCMF), this honor is reserved for research that has demonstrated “substantial, lasting, broad, and currently relevant impact.”

To meet the award’s rigorous criteria, a paper must have proven its endurance over several decades. Vazirani’s work was selected for its long-term influence as the standard model for keyword auctions and its unique ability to bridge abstract theory with the practical algorithms powering today’s multi-billion dollar advertising industry. By successfully addressing complex resource allocation and algorithm game theory, the paper has transitioned from a breakthrough discovery to a foundational pillar of digital commerce.
