Stuart Russell elected as Fellow of the Royal Society

EECS Professor Stuart Russell has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of sciences.

Ninety researchers from around the world were named in this year’s cohort of fellows. “Their achievements represent the very best of scientific endeavour, from basic discovery to research with real-world impact across health, technology and policy. From tackling global health challenges to reimagining what AI can do for humanity, their work is a testament to the power of curiosity-driven research and innovation,” said Sir Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society.

Russell holds the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering at UC Berkeley and is the director of the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence (CHAI). His research focuses on developing AI systems that are provably beneficial to humans. He has also been an advocate for the regulation of AI technologies to ensure they are developed and deployed responsibly.

By joining the Royal Society, new Fellows and Foreign Members follow in the footsteps of some of history’s greatest scientific minds, including Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Lise Meitner, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, and Dorothy Hodgkin.
