Sewon Min receives Honorable Mention for ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award

Sewon Min, who will join UC Berkeley EECS as an assistant professor in July 2025, has received an honorable mention for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. She was recognized for her dissertation, “Rethinking Data Use in Large Language Models,” which investigates how large language models (LLMs) learn from their training data and proposes new approaches to improve their performance, scalability, and responsible use.

Min’s research lies at the intersection of Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning, with a particular emphasis on understanding and advancing LLMs by examining how they interact with vast text corpora. Her work contributes to the development of more efficient, transparent, and adaptable AI systems.

She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Washington, where she was supported by a J.P. Morgan Ph.D. Fellowship. During her doctoral studies, she conducted research at Meta AI as a part-time visiting researcher and completed internships at Google Research and Salesforce Research. She holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from Seoul National University.
