Randy Katz receives honorary doctorate from University of Crete
EECS Professor Emeritus Randy Katz will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Crete. The honorary doctorate is a distinction awarded by the University of Crete to recognize outstanding achievements in scholarship, science, and societal impact.
Katz joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1983 and, in 1996, was named the United Microelectronics Corporation Distinguished Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is the co-inventor of RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks), a foundational technology that transformed data storage reliability and scalability.
In addition to his research and teaching, Katz served as Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Berkeley from 2018 to 2021, overseeing the campus’s research enterprise and promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, including the creation of the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub. He is a fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
