Armando Fox and Dan Garcia receive Leon A. Henkin Citation

EECS Professors Armando Fox and Dan Garcia have been awarded the prestigious Leon A. Henkin Citation by UC Berkeley’s Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Campus Climate (DECC). Named after Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Leon A. Henkin, who founded the Committee on Special Scholarships in 1963 to support students from underrepresented groups, the annual award honors faculty whose careers have been marked by a sustained effort to increase the academic success of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in academic disciplines.

Fox and Garcia were recognized for their collaborative efforts to implement equitable grading practices in EECS and the College of Engineering more broadly. Their work has aimed to improve outcomes for marginalized students while fostering a more inclusive classroom culture for all.

Professor Garcia has also contributed campus-wide through his involvement with the Universal Design for Learning working group, collaborating with faculty and GSIs across multiple disciplines. Both professors were praised by students for creating supportive, low-stress learning environments that prioritize authentic learning. Beyond their own courses, Gracia and Fox have led systemic, lasting changes in computer science education at Berkeley and beyond.
