Alane Suhr and Sewon Min

CS Assistant Professors Alane Suhr and Sewon Min have been honored with AAAI/ACM SIGAI Dissertation Awards.

Suhr received the 2022 AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award for her dissertation, “Reasoning and Learning in Interactive Natural Language Systems.” Suhr’s research advances natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and computer vision, with a focus on building intelligent systems capable of engaging in and continuously learning from natural language interactions in real-world contexts.

Min received an honorable mention for the 2024 AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award. Min’s research lies at the intersection of NLP and machine learning, with a particular emphasis on large language models (LLMs). Their work investigates how LLMs leverage vast text corpora, with the goal of improving their capabilities for reasoning, understanding, and knowledge adaptation.

The AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award was created to celebrate and foster exceptional dissertation research and writing in artificial intelligence by Ph.D. students. This annual award is presented during the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, where the recipient is also invited to deliver a presentation on their work.
